# AI Governance Copperlane uses artificial intelligence to help mortgage lenders collect, organize, and review borrower information. This policy explains the boundaries, oversight, and safeguards that apply to those capabilities. ## Human Decision-Making Copperlane supports licensed mortgage professionals. It does not replace their judgment or make independent lending decisions. Copperlane does not independently: - approve or deny a loan application - select a loan product - set an interest rate or price - issue a commitment to lend - determine an underwriting outcome - override a licensed professional AI-assisted results are informational. Lender teams remain responsible for credit, pricing, underwriting, and borrower decisions. ## How Copperlane Uses AI Copperlane can help lender teams with borrower intake, document collection, information extraction, application guidance, file summaries, follow-up, and preliminary loan-file review. These capabilities are designed to reduce manual work and help teams prepare more complete files. AI output can be incomplete or inaccurate. Staff can review and correct information before they use it. Customers control how Copperlane fits into their workflows and which low-risk reminders may be sent automatically. ## Data Use Copperlane processes borrower information only to provide and support the services that customers use. This information can include application data, documents, and communications. Copperlane does not use borrower documents, communication content, or borrower-identifiable information to train or fine-tune AI models. Copperlane can use aggregated, non-identifying operational signals to evaluate quality, find errors, and improve the platform. Customer data is protected through the controls described in [Security And Data Protection](/policies/security-and-data-protection). Third-party providers must meet Copperlane's security, privacy, and contractual requirements. ## Human Oversight And Reliability Copperlane maintains controls that support reliable and accountable AI use. These controls include: - human review for decisions and higher-impact actions - clear limits on what AI can do - testing before material changes reach customers - monitoring for errors and unexpected behavior - records that support review and investigation - access controls for customer and borrower information Copperlane reviews AI-assisted workflows as the platform changes. Material issues are investigated and corrected through the same change and incident processes used for other platform controls. ## Fair Lending Copperlane is not designed to make decisions based on protected characteristics. AI-assisted output does not replace the lender's fair-lending, compliance, or underwriting responsibilities. Lender teams must review Copperlane output in the context of their own policies and applicable law. ## Borrower Transparency And Choice Borrowers are told when they interact with automated assistance and can ask for help from their lender team. Communication preferences and opt-out requests are respected across supported channels. ## Vendor Oversight Copperlane reviews providers that can process customer data. Reviews consider security, privacy, data use, retention, access, and contractual protections. See [Subprocessors](/policies/sub-processors) for the current provider list; sign-in is required to read that document. ## Governance And Review Copperlane reviews this policy and its AI controls at least quarterly and after material changes. Responsibility for AI governance is shared across company leadership, product, engineering, security, and compliance functions.
